How to tie the Chewy Whistler

The Red and Black Whistler

The whistler is a great pattern for any predatory fish. Catch Trout, Steelhead, Pike, Tarpon or almost any species of fish that prey on smaller baitfish. Mix up the color of feathers, Puglisi Brush or marabou for different species as well as the size of fly depending on your quarry. Spin one up and give it a whirl!

What you'll need: the required Materials

1. Tie in bead-chanin eyes

2. Tie in Black Buck-tail to back of hook

2. Tie in two feathers from a saltwater cape

3. Add in rubber legs

4. Add in some black crystal flash

5. Now tie in Puglisi streamer brush and wrap forward

6. Wrap forward to 1/2 cm. from eyes and clip
7. Tease fibers out of brush with bodkin

8. Tie in Black Marabou and wrap forward against eyes

9.Cinch in marabou behind the eye and whip-finish.

10. Coat head with Hard as Hull. Done!

Why we like the Nano Puff

While Mike was gallivanting on Haida Gwaii, I was doing a lot of snowboarding. Jackson had been receiving about a foot of snow every 2 days, and was looking really good.

That was before I got there, I have a certain jinx on powder, as it usually happens immediately before and immediately after. We got a few inches, but what we mostly got was cold weather.

Typically going up the Chairlift in -25 degrees (plus windchill) would keep me away from most hills, but by layering up underneath my Primo Down with a Nano Puff, there was no way to keep me off the hill...And when the sun hit the slopes, the Nano is a great ski jacket in itself, being your top layer.

The Nano easily stuffs into a backpack for quick travel, as well as an emergency sweater for a cold lecture hall. All in all, you can't go wrong with it.

Check one out, you won't be disapointed.

Back From The ???? River-Part Three

So, the goal of the trip up was to try and get Maureen her first Steelhead. A task accomplished on the third day after a few hooked and lost fish.

Many, many, many Brownie Points re-earned by yours truly.

A trail normally accessible by vehicle turned into a difficult task to hike with all of the collapsed Alders. They don't seem to get this much snow very often.

A nice, clean, bright Buck.

Chunky Hen.

Stay tuned for further photos.......

Back From The ????-Part Two

So we headed out for five and a half days of fishing in our trusty Super Duty......

Up to the ???? River, about a 90 minute drive from ????. What would normally look like this......
Looked like this! Over the next 5 days we got about 2 feet of accumulated snow on the Upper ?????.

A couple of mornings mid-week were a little adventure filled, with a ton of downed trees blocking main roads, spur roads, and trails. We spent a little time for two of our mornings doing a little "tree skidding" to clear our way.

A new pathway created with saw, rope, tow hooks and 4 X 4!
We did, however get a fair amount of fishing in.

Even with seriously dropping water temperatures and levels we managed to stick a few Steelhead here and there.

One of my Intruders that I actually hung in an Alder on purpose for a photo. All others in assorted Alders somewhat accidental.

Typical run on the ????.
