Fishing Reports - July 27

Bow River Report –July 27, 2017

We are still seeing some great fish being caught on the Bow. This is certainly the best big Brown trout year since 2012 but with river levels now down to just over 100 CMS and this incessant heat we all need to be aware of water temperatures.

The Bow River monitoring station (below Carseland) has registered temps over 20 C twice in the last two weeks and if it wasn’t for cooler nights we would be in a lot worse shape. With the forecast temperatures over the foreseeable future, maybe restrict your fishing to early morning, no later than 2 PM.

Streamer fishing continues to be good and nymphing a small leech pattern under and indicator or foam fly has been deadly.

There is an advisory in place regarding low water levels and high water temperatures. This requests that anglers restrict angling activity to the early morning hours to minimize stress on fish.

Fishing Reports - July 20

Bow River Report –July 20, 2017

The fishing on the Bow continues to be pretty good. Still some really nice Brown Trout being caught almost every day and some pretty long and chunky Rainbows as well.

Although there have been huge numbers of evening caddis, it has been tough finding a ton of fish over 10” that are rising. Some bigger fish here and there, but not everywhere.

The Stonefly thing still works some but there are certainly a lot less bugs around.

Trico spinners have already shown up along the entirety of the river, as high as Glenmore, all the way to below Carseland. Hopefully this, combined with a little lower levels, leads to more rising fish in the coming weeks.

Having walked a few banks this past weekend, we can say that there are a LOT of hoppers. Keep your fingers crossed for some hopper fishing as we get into August.

Streamer fishing continues to be good and nymphing a small leech pattern under and indicator or foam fly has been deadly.

Please note that, as of last Friday, there is an advisory in place regarding low water levels and high water temperatures. This requests that anglers restrict angling activity to the early morning hours to minimize stress on fish.
So far, we have been lucky and retained decent flow volumes on the Bow. This has kept temperatures at reasonable levels. However, as the river drops it will be more affected by high temperatures. Keep your fingers crossed that these cooler nights continue and some rain would be nice.
